Acknowledgements Undertaking this PhD has been a truly life-changing experience for me and it would not have been possible to do without the support and guidance that I received from many people. I would like to first say a very big thank you to my supervisor Dr E.J. Milner-Gulland (EJ) for all the support and encouragement she gave me, during both the long months I spent undertaking my field.
This thesis is about people with mental health problems who happen to be older, rather than older people with mental health problems. Health policy that has focused on older people as a category has maintained a narrow focus on recognising depression and dementia, with older people being excluded from mental health policy aimed at adults of working age. This has resulted in age discriminatory.
